Do you use hyaluronic acid for lip augmentation? Important aspects to consider

Hyaluronic acid treatments are among the most used in lip, chin and cheek augmentation, in correcting dark circles, nasolabial folds (those wrinkles formed between the corner of the mouth, cheek and base of the nose) and accentuating the mandibular line and the mandibular angle.

The treatments are part of plastic and aesthetic surgery and are carried out by specialist doctors in this surgical branch dedicated to the medical approach to beauty.

Aesthetic procedures, despite the name, are not strictly limited to the physical appearance, but have deep implications in the human psyche through the beneficial effects produced on self-esteem and self-confidence.

The reasons underlying the choice of an aesthetic treatment are varied and numerous, from fading the effects of aging, to improving physical defects - the consequence of some traumas or medical conditions, and up to purely aesthetic purposes.

Choosing the clinic and the specialist

Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid is among the most sought-after aesthetic treatments. By injecting the acid, the appearance is improved in terms of shape, structure and volume.

Anyone can use lip augmentation according to their own wishes and self-perception, but it is also a procedure through which certain post-traumatic or congenital defects can be repaired or improved.

It is important that the injection of fillers is performed by a specialist doctor in order to reduce the risk of complications that may occur following this type of procedure.

Also, the doctor will inform the patients before the intervention about the materials used and the quantity used, at the same time presenting their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the possible results.

Patients who choose to have a lip augmentation procedure in places or with people not approved for these aesthetic procedures are exposed to various risks, from the use of unapproved fillers, to obtaining undesirable results such as asymmetry of the lips, but also to the appearance of nodules, hematoma or vascular occlusion.

Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid - advantages

The main advantage of lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid is that hyaluronic acid molecules are NOT perceived by the body as a foreign body since hyaluronic acid is present in our skin tissues. In addition, hyaluronic acid fillers are metabolized by the body naturally , which makes the effect temporary, on the order of months.

If the result does not meet the patient's expectations, the hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved by injecting Hyaluronidase, an enzyme that destroys hyaluronic acid molecules in contact with them.

At the same time, there is no risk that after the first injection the lips will get that unnatural, unaesthetic look.

Permanent fillers, such as those with silicone, have as their main disadvantage the fact that they represent a foreign body in the tissue of the lips, which can trigger a local inflammatory defense reaction from the body. In addition, silicone cannot be metabolised by our body and therefore can only be removed from the lips surgically.

Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid after another intervention

If the patient has used another solution for lip augmentation in the past, the injection of acid fillers is possible in certain situations. For example, if own fat was used in the previous intervention, lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid can be performed, but if silicone was used in the past that is still present in the lips, injection with hyaluronic acid is contraindicated.

Lip augmentation procedure with hyaluronic acid - step by step

The first step consists in making an appointment with the specialist doctor who will perform the procedure. For lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid fillers, the injection is possible during the first consultation, after the doctor has given the patient the necessary explanations, including the risks that can sometimes occur following the intervention, namely swelling (small local swelling) in the first 3 - 5 days and hematomas in the first 7 - 10 days (similar to a bruise, caused by blood coagulation).

Like the duration of the intervention, the aesthetic procedure does not last very long, concretely, the treatment with hyaluronic acid is ideal to be performed in a maximum of 5 minutes. The reduced time is so that the doctor can inject symmetrically before swelling appears. The swollen area can confuse the doctor regarding the required volume to inject.

Other useful information

After the injection of hyaluronic acid, the lips will lose their natural appearance momentarily, due to immediate swelling and possible hematomas. They appear on the spot, within a few minutes after the injection, but will disappear within about 7 days.

If the patient has a lip piercing, it must be removed before the intervention, otherwise the intervention is not indicated.

According to studies carried out over the years, performing aesthetic procedures contributes to the improvement of social anxiety and depression symptoms by stimulating self-esteem. The benefits on mental health and emotional balance do not stop here, a physical aspect that people are satisfied with is associated with a higher level of satisfaction and happiness.
